【Abstract】

The purpose of this study is to determine cognitive changes inplayers' evaluation of their team perfomance and to obtain basic dataon mental conditioning in water polo players. The subjects werethirteen members of the Japanese Men's National Water Polo Team (meanage of 22.4±1.97). The cognition for the team was examined by theSport Psychological Test for Teams(SPTT), composed of threefactors(the estimation of ability of the team, reliance on the coach, and relationship among the members). This test was administered tothe subjects before the qualifying match for the 1993 WorldUniversity Games, and then, before and after their participation inthe Games, in which they entered the final round of competition. Eachtime, qualitative assessment of individual behavior was also made. The results are as follows:

1)There was a significant difference in the estimation of theability of the team between before the selection and after theGames(p<0.05).

2)Variance in each factor showed a tendency to decrease.

3)According to standard score, there was an increase in theestimation of the ability of the team, but there were no changes inthe other two factors.

4)Communication among the members lessened as the game got closer.

5)Communication was restricted to players of the same age.
